GTA 6 on Switch 2: Will Rockstar’s Biggest Game Ever Go Portable?

Few upcoming games have the world buzzing quite like Grand Theft Auto 6. Rockstar’s next big open-world epic is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated game launches in history. Naturally, fans are wondering: will GTA 6 make its way to Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2?

So far, Rockstar Games has only confirmed GTA 6 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. There’s been no mention of a PC version (yet), and definitely no sign of a Switch 2 release. While delayed PC launches are nothing new for Rockstar, the Switch 2’s status is more of a mystery — and an intriguing one at that.

Can the Switch 2 Handle GTA 6?

Nintendo’s next console is expected to be significantly more powerful than the original Switch, but it still won’t match the raw horsepower of the PS5 or Xbox Series X. That’s important, because GTA 6 looks like a technical beast — with its sprawling environments, realistic lighting, and tiny environmental details that Rockstar is famous for.

It’s worth noting that the original Switch never got Grand Theft Auto 5, likely because the aging hardware couldn’t keep up. What it did get was Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which bundled the first three games in the series. Unfortunately, that release was plagued with performance issues, especially on the Switch, though Rockstar did patch it a month later with numerous fixes.

The Nintendo–Third-Party Puzzle

There’s been some chatter among developers about challenges getting access to Nintendo’s dev kits, which could explain why we haven’t heard much from third-party publishers yet. Still, it’s hard to imagine Nintendo ignoring Rockstar, or Rockstar ignoring the Switch 2 — especially given how well Nintendo’s consoles have sold.

And let’s be real: GTA 6 on a portable device? That would be a massive draw.

Could a Port Happen Later?

Even if GTA 6 isn’t available on Switch 2 at launch, that doesn’t mean it’s off the table. The game’s second trailer was reportedly captured entirely in-engine on PS5, which suggests Rockstar is still fine-tuning performance and optimization. With more time, a Switch 2 version could be possible — even if it doesn’t hit the same graphical highs as the PS5 version.

We’ve already seen ambitious titles like Cyberpunk 2077 make their way to less powerful platforms with clever optimization. So the idea of GTA 6 running on Switch 2 isn’t as far-fetched as it might sound.

Our Take

Putting the clues together, it seems plausible that GTA 6 will eventually come to the Switch 2 — just not at launch. Rockstar tends to play the long game, and with the release date currently set for May 26, 2026, there’s still plenty of time for surprises.

In the meantime, maybe Rockstar will throw Nintendo fans a bone: a port of GTA 5 or GTA Online could help bridge the gap nicely.
