Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, has recently clarified its stance on subscription services. While the publisher isn’t opposed to platforms like Game Pass or PS Plus, they’ve made it clear that brand-new blockbuster releases—especially something as huge as GTA 6—aren’t hitting those services right away.

Why Take-Two Is Cautious About Subscription Services

During a recent investor call, Take-Two president Karl Slatoff explained that the company’s strategy around Game Pass and PS Plus is highly selective. For them, it’s not about simply getting games in front of more players—it’s about whether the financial math adds up.

Yes, some titles (like GTA V and NBA 2K) have appeared on subscription platforms in the past, but these decisions weren’t random. Each time, Take-Two weighed the potential exposure against the revenue impact. If a deal doesn’t make clear economic sense, it’s off the table.

As Slatoff put it:

“We do put our titles occasionally into some of the subscription services. We wouldn’t do it unless it was a good economic deal.”

This approach reflects a bigger industry trend, with both Microsoft and Sony being equally strategic about the games they secure for their services.

Why GTA 6 Won’t Be a Day-One Subscription Title

When it comes to GTA 6, Take-Two has no plans to launch it on Game Pass or PS Plus from day one—and this isn’t surprising. CEO Strauss Zelnick has stressed that releasing high-profile games on subscription services at launch simply doesn’t make financial sense.

The reasoning is simple: a blockbuster like GTA 6 generates enormous revenue through direct sales. Dropping it immediately onto a subscription service risks devaluing the game and cutting into those profits.

Other studios have echoed similar concerns. For instance, Raccoon Logic’s Alex Hutchinson noted that releasing a title on Game Pass at launch led to lower-than-expected returns. Take-Two seems intent on avoiding that trap.

When Subscription Services Do Work

That doesn’t mean Take-Two is anti-subscription. In fact, they’ve had success with select titles on these platforms. For example, NBA 2K saw significant growth when added to PlayStation Plus.

Still, Slatoff emphasized that subscription success isn’t guaranteed—and it’s never the sole driver of a game’s popularity. Deals only happen when the numbers align with Take-Two’s broader financial strategy.

Put simply: subscription services are useful tools, but only under the right conditions.

What This Means for GTA 6 Fans

For players hoping to dive into GTA 6 on Game Pass or PS Plus the day it launches, patience will be key. Take-Two’s careful, profit-focused approach means you’ll almost certainly need to buy the game outright when it releases.

Down the line, there’s a good chance GTA 6 could make its way to subscription services—just like GTA 5 did—but not until it makes solid business sense for Take-Two.

For now, it’s clear that Take-Two is prioritizing the long-term value of GTA 6 over instant accessibility, making sure the most anticipated game of the decade lives up to its financial and cultural expectations.
