The wait for Grand Theft Auto VI has felt like a lifetime, but we are officially in the home stretch. With the release window now just eight months away—assuming Rockstar Games sticks to the plan—the hype has shifted from “what is the game?” to “how much is this going to hurt my wallet?”
For over a year, rumors have swirled that GTA VI might be the first “quadruple-A” game to break the $100 barrier for a standard edition. While the scale of the game is undoubtedly massive, a triple-digit price tag felt like a punch to the gut for many fans.
Thankfully, we finally have some clarity from the top.
Clearing the Air on Costs
In a recent interview with The Game Business, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick (the man holding the keys to the Rockstar kingdom) addressed the potential for in-game advertising. While discussing revenue, he dropped a massive hint about the game’s actual retail price:
“It’s very difficult for me to believe that we would want to have interstitial advertising in a game that someone paid 70 or 80 bucks for; that would seem unfair.”
This quote is a huge sigh of relief for fans. It suggests that while GTA VI will definitely be on the higher end of modern pricing, it will likely stay within the $70–$80 range for the standard edition. Of course, you can still expect those high-tier Collector’s Editions to cost a small fortune, but the entry barrier remains “normal.”
A Fresh Start in Vice City
Zelnick also touched on the twelve-year gap between the fifth and sixth installments. Rather than seeing the delay as a hurdle, he views it as a strategic win.

Generational Shift: Kids who were too young for GTA V are now adults with their own disposable income.

No Homework Required: You don’t need to have played a single minute of previous games to dive into GTA VI. It’s being designed as a perfect jumping-off point for newcomers.
When Can We Pre-Order?
The million-dollar question remains: When can we actually buy it? If we look at Rockstar’s history, they love to coordinate major news with Take-Two’s earnings calls. The next big call is scheduled for May 14. Given that Zelnick has already mentioned a summer marketing blitz, mid-May feels like the “safe bet” for when pre-orders will officially go live.
We are roughly six months out from the expected launch, making May the perfect window to open the floodgates.
