Rockstar North Offices Reopen After Early-Morning Emergency Incident

Rockstar Games has confirmed that its Edinburgh studio, Rockstar North, is fully open and operational following an early-morning incident that prompted a response from emergency services.

In a statement provided to IGN, a Rockstar Games spokesperson explained that the situation stemmed from a malfunction involving one of the building’s heating boilers. Emergency crews were quickly dispatched to assess the issue and ensure the safety of everyone on site.

“Early Monday morning, there was a malfunction in one of the heating boilers at Rockstar North,” the spokesperson said. “We appreciate everyone who reached out with concern, as well as the police and fire crews who responded swiftly. We’re pleased to confirm that everyone is safe and the studio remains open.”

While early reports from emergency personnel referenced “structural damage” to the building, Rockstar’s statement suggests that any damage was minor and did not disrupt studio operations.

What Happened?

Fire services were called to Rockstar North’s main offices on Holyrood Road in Edinburgh at approximately 5:02 a.m. local time, following reports of an explosion in a boiler room. According to local outlet Edinburgh Live, seven emergency vehicles were dispatched to the scene.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service later confirmed that three fire appliances and specialist teams were deployed to secure the site. Firefighters remained at the building for more than four hours before leaving at around 9:21 a.m. Authorities also confirmed that there were no injuries reported.

A Pivotal Location for Rockstar Games

Rockstar’s Edinburgh headquarters has long been the creative core of the company, serving as the primary development hub for every major Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption title. Most recently, the studio has been in the spotlight due to ongoing tensions surrounding layoffs, which some former employees claim were linked to union activity—an allegation Rockstar has strongly denied.

Although initial reports suggested the office may remain closed for the day, Rockstar’s latest update confirms that work has resumed as normal. At this stage, it’s unclear whether the incident will have any impact on the development or release schedule of Grand Theft Auto 6, which is currently slated for launch on November 19 after multiple delays.

For now, fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the situation was contained quickly—and that development at Rockstar North continues uninterrupted.
