The tiered release strategy for Grand Theft Auto 6 has once again left the PC community staring at a locked door. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick recently clarified the reasoning behind this decision, noting that Rockstar prioritizes consoles because they view that player base as the “core” demographic for a blockbuster of this magnitude.
For fans—particularly in regions like India, where PC and laptop gaming dominate the creator and streaming scenes—this “consoles-first” approach feels like a relic of the past. It’s a frustrating position to be in; nobody enjoys being the last one invited to the year’s biggest event.
The Strategy Behind the Staggered Launch
During a recent interview, Zelnick articulated the studio’s philosophy:
“Rockstar always starts on console because I think with regard to a release like that you’re judged by serving the core.”
He further emphasized the need for “really serving the core consumer.”
The message is unambiguous: Rockstar believes that to ensure the success of a title this significant, they must first satisfy the platform owners they consider their primary audience. Zelnick suggested that if this “core” isn’t “served first and best,” expanding the game to other platforms becomes a much steeper uphill battle. While this provides insight into Rockstar’s internal logic, it likely offers little comfort to those waiting for a Steam or Epic Games Store listing.
A Growing Market Left on Standby
The most striking part of the discussion was Zelnick’s admission regarding the massive growth of the PC market. He pointed out a dramatic shift in the industry’s landscape:
Then: When Take-Two started, PC sales for titles like NBA 2K hovered around 5%.
Now: For major modern releases, PC can account for 45% to 50% of total sales.
This statistic makes the delay even more difficult for the community to swallow. If nearly half of a major game’s revenue can come from PC, the decision to exclude it on day one feels increasingly disconnected from current market realities.
For the time being, GTA 6 remains a console-exclusive event. While a PC port is inevitable, Rockstar has yet to pin a date on the calendar. Until then, PC enthusiasts will have to rely on their patience, their memes, and perhaps a very generous friend with a PlayStation or Xbox.
