Clothing customization might look like a small detail in the massive world of video games, but don’t let that fool you—outfits can play a huge role in how players connect with their characters. Even if it seems like only a “tiny bit of control,” being able to dress your character the way you want helps create the feeling that you’re truly stepping into their world.
Of course, not every player spends hours in the wardrobe menu. Some pick an outfit and never look back; others don’t bother changing the default gear at all. But in a game like GTA 6, where the vibe is all about living large in a bustling city full of opportunity and crime, having a wide range of clothing options feels right at home—especially once the cash starts flowing.
However, not everyone is content with how Rockstar has handled outfits in the past. On Reddit, one player made a heartfelt plea to the developers, hoping a particular frustration from GTA V won’t make a return:
“Please, Rockstar. PLEASE don’t make Jason and Lucia change clothes when you’re not using them.”
They went on to express how annoying it was in GTA V when the three protagonists would randomly switch outfits whenever they weren’t the active character. For players who loved fine-tuning their look, constantly having their chosen outfits overwritten made customization feel pointless. You could style a character exactly the way you wanted—only to return after a mission and find them wearing something completely different.
And yes… the player also joked that they hoped GTA 6 would release before they die. A relatable sentiment for fans everywhere.
Back to the wardrobe problem: the frustration makes sense. There’s something satisfying about crafting the perfect look, and equally irritating when the game undoes it without warning.
Now, to be fair, GTA 6 will almost certainly feature some outfits that automatically appear for mission purposes. Story scenes, heists, and special locations—like the nightclub moment we’ve already seen—will require specific looks. That’s totally normal. But once those moments are over? It would be a huge quality-of-life improvement if Jason and Lucia automatically swapped back into whatever the player chose beforehand.
At this point, we still don’t know exactly how character switching will work in GTA 6. Will we bounce between Jason and Lucia freely, or choose one to stick with for long stretches of gameplay? Either way, appearance matters, and players want control over how these characters present themselves.
In the end, respecting customization is about respecting player agency—and if Rockstar nails that, it’ll go a long way toward making GTA 6 even more immersive.
