A fan-led project has sparked excitement across the gaming community with a bold new estimate — the Grand Theft Auto 6 map could be 2.7 times larger than the already massive world of its 2013 predecessor, GTA 5.
Set to launch on May 26, 2026, Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to be one of the biggest releases in video game history. Earlier this year, Rockstar Games announced a delay from the game’s original 2025 release date but compensated fans with an “unprecedented” amount of information about the long-awaited sequel — including details about its characters, locations, and story.
Now, one dedicated fan community has taken that information and turned it into something special. The group, known as GTA6 Mapping, has used every clue and snippet from trailers and official updates to piece together their version of the game’s map. According to their findings, the new world will be 2.7 times larger than that of GTA 5.
“As fans of the game, the hype usually starts when the game is announced. Usually the mapping begins when we get the first trailers and screenshots of the game, and it’s worked this way since we were waiting for Vice City’s release,” explained one of GTA 6 Mapping’s members. “Since then, we’ve successfully mapped many of the games with each one getting more accurate.”
For many, the art of “mapping” has become a tradition — a way to explore the world of Grand Theft Auto long before the official release.
“I feel like Rockstar has this magic in their games that not many other developers can achieve. There’s this attention to detail. With Grand Theft Auto 6, we know we’ll get a world that will take years to appreciate, explore and fully understand. Mapping GTA is like going on vacation somewhere beautiful and memorising your favourite bits,” the fan continued.
The buzz surrounding GTA 6 hasn’t stopped there. Last month, new leaks suggested that the game could feature parodies of popular apps like WhatsApp and Uber, after Rockstar registered a number of related website domains. Meanwhile, other fans believe they’ve already uncovered the voices behind the game’s new protagonists, Lucia and Jason.
Since the major information drop back in May, Rockstar has remained tight-lipped, prompting speculation that another delay could be on the horizon. However, former Rockstar employee Obbe Vermeij shut down those rumours, calling them “clout chasing.” Meanwhile, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick reassured fans that he’s confident the game will arrive on time.
Whether or not the map truly is 2.7 times bigger, one thing is certain — Grand Theft Auto 6 is on track to deliver one of the most ambitious open worlds ever created.
